These birds wanted to be together – that’s all I am able to say about this otherwise inexplicable poem.

These birdlings assembled themselves into a flocklet quite naturally. They are united by their literally diminutive names, which can be used in Portuguese to denote smallness or affection or both. The alegrinho is joyful, the soldadinho is a soldier and the azulinho is a tremendous blue.
I think my favourite of these tiny birds is the patinho (duckling) which is clearly not a duck, but very much a duckling. And although the name of the assanhadinho might be translated as restless – the Greek-Latin composite scientific name means small bearded one who lives in flight – the rhythm of the spoken poem in full is one I find quite restful and soothing.
Oddly, and I have no idea why, whereas all the other seven poems in the mini-series have been viewed on average 3 times, this poem has been viewed 143 times, which I can only assume means that it’s gone viral, perhaps because it is so soothing.
